25 YR CRIME TREND

The following charts and tables were compiled using source data from the FBI Crime Data Explorer “Agency” query and Census. Selected agencies are the primary policing agency in the given City like “Memphis Police Department”. In Memphis and other cities, excluded from the query were agencies like “Memphis-Shelby Airport Authority”. The cities measured include those selected by the Greater Memphis Chamber as a peer group, as well as the addition of remaining Tennessee municipalities. This page was updated on 9/16/25 using the latest FBI data.

The city group listing includes: Brimingham, Chattanooga, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Knoxville, Louisville, Memphis, Milwaukee, Nashville, New Orleans, Oklahoma City and St. Louis. Also appearing in the list is the Nation as a whole and the Peer City Average, that includes Memphis a “Peer Average”, while excluding the Nation for comparative benchmarking purposes. Crimes per 100K population were measured to facilitate a common measurement standard. The bar charts include 2023 and 2024 outcomes, and the line graphs are outcomes from 2013-24. See below:
